How did you become a hairstylist?

It started as a favor to my parents, really. I started beauty school in June 2017 right after graduating high school because my dad promised to pay for my tuition. While in high school, I was doing early college courses pursuing a degree in music education. My plan was to finish beauty school and work at some chain salon while working on my degree. None of that went as planned.

I ended up absolutely LOVING hair and how the world opened up for me when I stared working on clients. I grew up very isolated as a Wasian only child in a small, bigoted town with nothing to do and no car to go places with things to do. I especially loved creative color and hair show projects.

Fast forward to now, I did not get my degree, I do not work for a chain salon and my dad did not pay for my beauty school tuition. But I did graduate in July 2018 and eventually end up at a salon with amazing coworkers and a boss/friend that supports me and all my crazy ideas.

Why are you a hairstylist?

I love the beauty of creating beautiful, colorful hair and getting to know the beautiful, colorful people that trust me to create art on their head. While I do enjoy painting wigs, there's just something so special and fulfilling when I get to turn that chair around and see I made someone feel beautiful and confident.

What do you enjoy doing outside the salon?

Outside the salon, I actually have another job where I serve as the lead Eye Spa technician at Albuquerque Vision Care. There I perform aesthetic treatments that help ease dry eye symptoms and assist the doctors in coordinating patient care.

On my days off, I'm maintaining Libre's website, social platforms and other communications, as well as maintaining my own socials and my new baby, @505hairstylists, a collaborative support page just for New Mexico hairstylists.

My non-work related hobbies are pole dancing, reading, painting and playing Cyberpunk for the millionth time whilst rotting on the couch. I also enjoy spending time with my adoring husband, Austin, and our two cat babies, Steve and Tippy.
